DecafNation - The Process of Decafinating Coffee James Coffee Co.

Imagine coffee sans caffeine, without sacrificing the quality. The Swiss Water Process creates the opportunity for roasters like us to offer a by-the-cup experience, even with decaf coffee.

Swiss Water Process uses the elements of water, temperature and time to create some of the most intriguing decaf coffee.

We’d like to say the process is very simple, but in order for such a complex process to be achieved — Swiss Water Process has a very precise set of steps that seamlessly work together to create this amazing bean, a no caffeine bean. We’re here to hold your hand through it while we outline how it works.

    THE PROCESS

The beans start in the green coffee silo. Green coffee beans are simply beans that have not yet been roasted. These pre-roasted beans head into a pre-cleaning where foreign matter is removed. Next up is the pre-soak where the beans expand by 100%. This prepares them for the extraction.

The beans are now in coffee columns where the caffeine lean green coffee (GCE)  extract flows into the coffee columns kicking off the extraction process. GCE lets caffeine venture out until the ratio of soluble compound in the GCE to the compounds in the coffee reach a point of equilibrium. This is the end of the line for caffeine.

The now decaf coffee is sent to the dryer for an evaporative drying process where moisture is converted into vapor and removed. This chemical-free decaffeination process takes approximately 10 hours.

Those behind this process are dedicated to simply coaxing caffeine out of the bean, while letting roasters all over the world artfully craft the roast they (and you) desire. You can late night sip without the “wired” consequences.

    DECAFNATION

Now that you understand that the flavor and character of the coffee remains untouched, are you ready? DecafNation is available at James Coffee Co. for $17.00 with a full body, sweet aroma, going down clean and smooth. Roasted in San Diego, CA.
