How to make cold brew coffee at home James Coffee Co.

We love experimenting with different brew methods, but for the summer, cold brew is no doubt our favorite! It is easy to make cold brew at home and when you make a big batch you'll have coffee for weeks. During the cold brew process, time replaces heat. Coffee is never exposed to high temperature like it is with hot coffee which makes a balanced and smooth cup of iced coffee.

Here's our house recipe for cold brew concentrate made with the Toddy Cold Brew System (you can also use a bucket and strainer or a french press):

What you'll need:

  • 12 oz/ 340 grams of coffee (we love Shop Blend for cold brew)
  • 56 fl. oz (about 7 cups) of filtered water
  • grinder (we recommend using a burr grinder, but electric grinder will also work)
  • scale
  • Toddy cold brew system
    or
  • a large bucket
  • fine mesh sieve or paper filter
  • cheese cloth

Method:

  • Set your grinder to coarse and grind your coffee. You want the ground coffee to resemble coarse sea salt.
  • Place the ground coffee into your brewing container (if you are using the Toddy System, make sure to insert the stopper, dampen the filter and insert it into the bottom of the brewing container before you place the coffee in there).
  • Slowly pour the filtered water over your grounds and make sure to get all the coffee wet (you can use the back of a spoon to dampen the grounds floating on top).
  • Steep your coffee grounds for 12 to 24 hours at room temperature (set a timer!).
  • Filtering the coffee: Line the mesh sieve with cheese cloth and place over any container/pitcher (whatever you'd like to store your cold brew in). If you use the Toddy System, just remove the stopper and let your coffee concentrate flow into the glass decanter.
  • Cut your concentrate with water. We recommend a 1:1 cold brew ratio, but you can always change it up to your liking, but for our cold brew coffee ratio, this is what we like in our cafes. For 2-3 servings, mix 2 cups of water with 2 cups of cold brew concentrate.
  • Serve over ice and enjoy!

Your cold brew concentrate can be stored up to two weeks in your refrigerator. Cold brew all day, every day! Now you know how to make cold brew at home and o coffee maker needed. Serve it over ice in a mason jar with some oat milk for a perfect summer iced coffee drink.
